Port tax war delayed by one year

Port tax war delayed by one year | BDM Blog | BDM Law

The US port taxes primarily on Chinese owned and built vessels have been postponed by one year from 10 November 2025. Chinese retalitory port taxes on US vessels also to be postponed from the same date.

Of course some owners and operators will still be caught by the period from 14 October to 10 November when these taxes were in place. So perhaps all the work done on this by us and others was not in vain and of course we’ll have to revisit this again next November.

The uncertainty of course doesn’t help those who may be planning to build ships in China or use PRC lease finance. Do they proceed and take a risk that these charges will not come back into place? Or do they look elsewhere?
