Those of you who regularly read our blog may have seen our earlier article “Indonesia sets the cat amongst the pigeons!” regarding the Indonesian government’s decision not to enforce the IMO 2020 sulphur cap regulations on Indonesian flagged vessels plying domestic routes.
Yesterday, in a quick turnaround, the Indonesian Ministry of Transport announced that the IMO 2020 regulations will apply to “all Indonesian-flagged vessels starting Jan. 1, 2020, both for domestic and foreign shipping.” The logic behind this quick U-turn has not yet been released.
Bearing in mind the reasons given for the original decision, cost and compatibility of older vessels, we do not think this will be the last we hear on this issue.
