James Ingham

Managing Associate

James joined BDM in October 2025 from an international shipping law firm. He is an experienced wet and dry maritime lawyer, with a unique perspective from many years working in-house. This included 5 years living in Japan where he worked as the Director responsible for establishing an FSA regulated P&I Club branch office. He has also worked in Singapore and maintains a strong network across Japan, Asia and Europe.

James has acted in the full spectrum of shipping and related disputes. He has handled high-profile marine casualties as well as complex charterparty and commercial disputes. He has conducted litigation in the Admiralty and Commercial Court, as well as maritime and trade arbitrations and mediations. He has extensive experience managing proceedings in many global jurisdictions. He is effective at tracing vessels and obtaining security (including from associated ships/charterers), also in negotiating security wording on behalf of insurers and clients.

James has represented major shipowners, container lines, charterers, energy companies and trading houses from Japan, Asia and Europe. He also acts for insurers and P&I Clubs, where his industry knowledge is particularly appreciated.

With 5 years as a Member of the IG Pollution Sub-Committee, James has represented the International Group of P&I Clubs and industry stakeholders on various working groups and at international conferences on marine pollution and large casualties. He has participated in training drills and programmes for oil spill response and marine casualty management, including media response. He has drafted Club guidelines and policies on matters from SPRO contracts to compliance with rules on LNG Conditions of Use.

In addition to his practical legal expertise, clients appreciate James’s personal commitment and commercial approach to resolving disputes. His service is reinforced by efficient claims management and his trusted global network of maritime experts.

James speaks Spanish and is “always improving” his Japanese.
